Spin Me A Yarn

Spin Me A Yarn is an oversized ball of luminous wool with a long trail of yarn that interacts with its surrounding area. The illuminated and unusually large-scale forces us to view it in a completely different way, playfully changing the meaning of our relationship to ordinary objects and our environment.

Spin Me a Yarn brings attention to the sustainability problem in the fashion industry. In today’s culture of one-click purchases, short-term wear, and subsequent disposal in landfills, the damaging impact of fast fashion is undeniable. Fashion production makes up 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions, dries up water sources and pollutes rivers and streams. What is more, 85% 9or approximately 21 billion tons) of all textiles go to landfill each year, while washing some types of clothes sends a significant amount of microplastics into the ocean.

Many of the changes needed to make clothing more sustainable have to be implemented by the manufacturers and big companies that control the fashion industry. But as consumers, the changes we all make in our behaviour not only add up, but can drive change in the industry too.
